Why is the gallbladder removed?

The gallbladder stores bile produced by the liver. Gallstones can block bile flow and cause repeated upper-abdominal pain, inflammation, infection, jaundice, or pancreatitis. Cholecystectomy removes the gallbladder and prevents stones from forming inside it again.
